Are You Deserving?

Do you know that the only thing that can ever hold you back is your own limiting beliefs?

Now, what is a limiting belief? A limiting belief is a belief that contradicts your desire. That's it.

Well, how did you get those beliefs? You just picked them up along your physical trail, and now you drag them everywhere you go.

Do you do it deliberately?

Do you say, "I think I will carry limiting beliefs around with me, to keep me from thriving, to keep me from being clear minded, to keep me from being safe, to keep me from being well, to keep me from being prosperous. I think I will just pick through the rubble of physical human experience, and I will just gather up a whole parcel of things that don't serve me well. And I'll carry them around and pass them on from generation to generation, and I'll make my life miserable with them and, hopefully, I'll pass them on to my children who will do the same."?

It's not like that at all, is it? Not one of your limiting beliefs did you pick up deliberately intending to do yourself or someone else harm. You did not do any of this in a deliberate way, you did it in an indeliberate way, because you did not understand the power of your emotions. You did not believe that feeling good meant that it was good for you.

When people used to ask what my website was about, I used to say Happiness feeling somewhat stupid. And they’d laugh. I felt stupid and they laughed because I knew we were talking about different things.

They understood happiness to be the momentary elation when something you really wanted happens. And so it seems pretty stupid to have a site about that.

To me happiness is the purpose and the scorecard of life. But I hadn’t found the way to express this to people who came from a different context.

Life is just so simple. It’s like breathing. But we’ve all grown up in an environment that has taught us we have to follow more rules than we know in order to deserve anything. Then maybe if we’ve been a good boy or girl, we’ll be given stuff that will make us happy. Just like our early teacher’s gave us a gold star.

You can have anything that you want. You don’t have to jump through any hoops to get it. The world will give you any experience, any feeling or anything that you want. It’s you that pushes it away.

Why?

Because you don’t believe you deserve it. Either because you feel you need to qualify for it or because you don’t believe you are a worthy enough person.

People get what they believe they deserve. Not what they actually deserve. There is no universal judge or Supreme Court sitting in judgement. Everything is available to you however good or bad you are. Look around and you’ll find people who have everything, yet you consider them to be undeserving. And equally you’ll find those whom you see as deserving, with nothing.

This applies to everything in life. Relationships, success, happiness, fun. Let’s take money as an example. It’s not about hard work. Life doesn’t care about any of that stuff. It wouldn’t matter if you worked flat out a hundred hours, of the hardest labour, a week for twenty years. Still all your earnings wouldn’t dent Bill Gates’.

Neither is it intelligence. Many of the smartest people in the world earn meagre wages.

Nor is it skill. You can be the greatest tiddlywinks player in the whole world. Still you are unlikely to earn fortunes.

It all comes down to believing that you deserve it. And so people who feel undeserving or don’t believe that the world will deliver for them… unconsciously put the brakes on. This then translates into missing opportunities or action that is less effective, or productive, than it could have been. Then they get what they believed they deserve.

In much the same way you’ll see examples of people who win fortunes without raising a finger. Or you’ll hear stories of some Film or Pop Star’s outrageous demands. They make these – and get them – because they feel so deserving in that specific area. That doesn’t mean that being deserving means acting like a spoilt brat. That’s just how some people get themselves to feel deserving.

And because you feel deserving in one area of your life. That doesn’t necessarily mean you will feel deserving in other areas. Often great wealth causes lack of happiness in relationships. It doesn’t have to, but the person concerned may believe it does and so unconsciously creates those situations.

It is feeling deserving that opens you up to the ideas, abilities and opportunities that bring to you whatever it is you want. All the wisdom, skill and circumstances are available to you. You only have to tune into what you want, by allowing yourself to receive and act on inspiration.

Much of the pain that we feel, comes not from what happens. But from the endless replays and brooding on what happens. The resentment, anger and frustration from trying to appeal to what is fair or justified. Almost every day there is a story in the newspaper of someone who is by most accounts morally justified in their actions. Yet through a legal technicality they end up punished. In the same way life doesn’t work on your version of what actions are fair or justified. It just is.

We often look at life and think the things we want are rewards. The universe understands that things, relationships and experiences are just the tools we use for evolution. So as the force of life flows through us we experience desire and repulsion. These work to get us to move through life, to experience more.

Say for example, you have a driving ambition to start your own business. Ultimately, at the deepest levels of your being, it isn’t for money or success or even more time. You are experiencing that desire in order to put yourself into situations that will bring you more growth.

In the same way repulsion at your current work may be to get you into a new job to experience something new. Because the new is what you need to grow and evolve you.
